Italtile | BLOG | Ode to Neutrals | September 2021 Read More

2021's Most Comforting Canvas - Sanctuary, and the search for calm, was once an every-now-and-then spoil. A special treat. But now that we’re more than 500 stress-filled days into the Pandemic, the hunt for soul-soothing solutions has become an everyday activity. The Sanctuary Trend with its cocooning aesthetic of tangible comfort has arrived and we don’t see it hopping on a bus any day soon. Just breathe!

Creating a calm space around us goes beyond lighting a few scented soy candles; it requires a careful and considered curation of tones and textures that link each room in a continuous song of gentle joy. We like to call it The Stress Relief Palette, and it stars our all-time favourites. Neutrals. 2021’s most comforting canvas.

We love neutrals for their plush elegance, and their pleasingly elastic personality – perfectly suited to urban, classic, modern or natural mood boards. From traditional to cottagecore, to contemporary and minimalist.

Friday 06 August 2021 | Spring, is that you? Safari by Justin van Breda & SoHo Loft Read More
Spring, is that you? There’s always debate as to when spring officially begins in September.

But looking outside right now…we’re hearing the chirping of birds, witnessing the greening of lawns, the budding of blooms and the shooting of new leaves again, not to mention the welcome rise in temperature. Suffice to say, the gun has been fired.

As we collectively throw the doors open, crawl back out into the sunlight, plan alfresco lunches and take advantage of that coveted indoor-outdoor lifestyle here in South Africa, we can’t help feeling a sense of renewal. A cheesy and overused sentiment, you say? Sure, but after the year we’ve all had…again, we’ll take it. Southern Vines, aspiring for greatness - Winter 2021 Read More
Now onto our very exciting news…

Due to growth and demand, Southern Vines will be transforming and changing to ASPIRE LIFESTYLE. From very humble beginnings 6 years ago, the name Southern Vines was initially intended to suit a publication for the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town only. After our first issue in 2015, the magazine grew exponentially, and it was in a very short time that we grew to a national distribution. Now, after a while of planning and listening to the market, we are taking the leap and embracing a name change. I think it’s perfect timing, and I have no doubt that ASPIRE LIFESTYLE will exceed expectations once again.

Print run will increase. Distribution will increase. Content will be elevated.

We have already started to communicate this change, and a big rollout online is planned for the next coming months. In addition, the website will be transformed, too.

Our next edition of ASPIRE LIFESTYLE will be on shelf from 1 September 2021, SPRING TIME!

Join us this Saturday, the 28th of August 2021, from 10h00 - 11h00 for a walkabout with the Artist at Salon Ninety One.

Sitaara Stodel is an artist who uses her creative practice to explore and unpack the experiences of moving homes regularly during her formative years.  Throughout her many moves, from childhood to adult life, her idea around “home” has shifted and evolved many times.  Her experience of the home as a transitory space has called into question the very nature of this concept.  The artist, having experienced over and over the event of being removed, or removing herself, from spaces which are usually demarcated as a home, Stodel has had to grapple with the abstract concept of a home-space and the lived reality of one...

Solo Exhibition: Polyrhythmic Clay by Ian Garrett
In his first major solo exhibition since 2017, Ian Garrett presents a group of new works titled ‘Polyrhythmic Clay’. Three years in the making, this body of work reconnects the artist with colour, African musicology and his relationship with clay.

Garrett has a life-long fascination with the primordial ceramic technology of hand-building, burnishing and pit-firing. He is informed by an expert knowledge of archaic traditions and the methods of construction as well as the different firing processes employed by southern African Zulu, Sotho and Venda potters. Garrett is influenced by many eclectic sources in his pattern construction, and his meticulously considered colours, hues and tones evoke a very specific mood as intended by the artist.

Garrett was awarded the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship at the National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, USA in 2015.

‘Rekindling a long-held interest in African musicology, I have conceptualised each of these new works as an abstract composition similar in structure to a piece of music, perhaps even a synaesthetic version of music itself. In my mind, the dominant compositional lines of my patterns are akin to musical form, echoing the structural elements of tempo, rhythm, melody and harmony. Smaller elements of pattern being subject to the same playful repetition and variation as musical phrases’

Jaco van Schalkwyk: Smoke and Mirrors
Barnard is pleased to present Jaco van Schalkwyk’s latest solo exhibition Smoke and Mirrors.

Prof Karen van Veh will hold the opening address on Saturday 28 August at 10:00

As the title suggests, not all is as it seems in this the artist’s latest body of paintings. While those familiar with Van Schalkwyk’s work will at once recognize his characteristic and meticulous attention to detail in the rendering of these painted panoramas of dense woodland and wilderness whereabouts, it is evident on closer observation that the seemingly familiar has become at once foreign. These images hold a sense of disquiet beneath their painted surfaces - a ‘certain uncertainty’ that is simultaneously beguiling and unsettling ...

Art is Art Gallery
The opening of the reception is scheduled to take place over 3 evenings, starting on Wednesday the 8th of September 2021 from 6:00 p.m. in the evening till 9:00 p.m. On Saturday the 11th of September we will host an early afternoon reception from 11 a.m. in the morning till 2 p.m. The exhibition concludes 30 September 2021.

At Art is Art Gallery we believe in the celebration of South African talent. We are constantly giving a platform to upcoming, disadvantaged, established, unique and local artists. For our upcoming show, we have decided to host our very first GROUP EXHIBITION. Our exhibition will highlight five unique artists, allowing them further exposure and an opportunity to be showcased within these complex times. Our group exhibition remains titled as “GROUP EXHIBITION” as we do not want to group or limit our artists within a thematic framework for the show. We want all of our artists to shine individually, yet harmoniously exist together within the exhibition space.

GROUP EXHIBITION will be featuring these incredible artists: Johan Alberts, Androette Bekker, Evert Esterhuizen, Phillip Heenop and Stefan Hofmeyr. This will be the first time these artists all showcase as a collective at Art is Art Gallery. Whilst our artists are all celebrated for their own unique style of making, there are some similarities between them. Bekker, Esterhuizen, Heenop, Alberts and Hofmeyr all have an interest in the human form. All artists explore the human form in very different ways; exploring portraits, figurative forms, realistic representations and silhouettes. Each artist also has a strong and distinct sense of colour and decoration within their practices. GROUP EXHIBITION will be a celebration of each artist’s unique style and approach to making art.

The concept of the human state-of-mind is also a common and underlying thread between our chosen artists. Each focus on different ways to explore emotion, identity and existing within a fast paced culture. Between these artists there is also a strong sense of open-ended-ness within each of their practice. Each work will allow for the viewer to create their own assumptions and narratives while viewing an artwork. While all the artists are vastly different, their work delightfully sits together, all complimenting one-another’s practice.

We are very excited to curate, host and celebrate Bekker, Esterhuizen, Heenop, Alberts and Hofmeyr at Art is Art Gallery.

The Group Exhibition and the opening of the first reception is scheduled to take place on Wednesday the 8th of September 2021 from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. at Art is Art Gallery, located in Buchanan Square, 160 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock, Cape Town. This event will be repeated on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th of September from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. Additionally on Saturday the 11th of September we will host an early afternoon reception from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. at Art is Art Gallery. The exhibition concludes the 30th of September.

We will be hosting 3 opening-evening events in order to accommodate and ensure our visitors will have multiple options within their own availability to attend. This “spreading out” of opening events also allows us, Art is Art Gallery, to be more considerate of our client’s safety and remain COVID compliant.

Sasria & Cyber Liability
Business operates in a time of unprecedented volatility across economies, demographics and geopolitics and as these risks evolve, business leaders can no longer rely on traditional risk mitigation tactics. Risks exist beyond the traditional loss or theft of property, equipment and other assets to devastating weather catastrophes, cyber hacks, riots, personal liability, fraud, organised crime and class action lawsuits. More than ever, risk managers must explore new ways to cope with evolving and heavily inter-related complexities.
